Thanks for the question, Kristina. Keep in mind that if you start a chat room, you will not meet new people. But if you want a place where you can talk with your friends, then creating your own chat room is a good idea.

If you just want a quick, temporary chat room, check out http://www.chatzy.com/. You'll have a functional chat room in minutes and it even allows you to e-mail your friends the link right from their website.

If you have your own website and want to add a more permanent chat room to it, try using http://www.addonchat.com/ which is a free Java chat room. Another alternative is http://www.2createawebsite.com/enhance/create-chat-room.html which provides step-by-step instructions.

A third alternative is to invite your friends to chat over IM. Just about all the major IMs have a chat feature. Simply create a chat on your computer and then start inviting your friends to join.
