We love the movies, and we often develop our crushes and ideas about romance from charactersin them. James Bond, Pretty Woman, Bacall & Bogart, Bennifer & Brangelina…who are the icons of romance you like? Why? Most of all…how has that shaped your actual love life? |

Bogart and Bergman in Casablanca. Rick gave up the woman he loved for a higher ideal and to a man who did love her, possibly in a better way than Rick could because of the type of person Rick was. Love Actually is another fantastic, romantic film that shows all the love that one might experience from deep love to troubled love to lost love, first love and soppy love. |

I keep hearing about “Love Actually” - I think I may finally have to watch it. I realized I forgot to put in my own inspiration. It’s kind of embarrassing - Wesley, who overcame all obstacles to be with his Princess Buttercup. It actually may have been a bad role model to pick - I seem to have a tendency to enjoy being the “rescuer” and also long-distance relationships (in the Princess Bride he was gone from her for 5 years). What I also find amusing is that as I’m older, I like more the movies that are less about the guy rescuing the girl as about the guy rescuing his daughter… |

I have two favorite romantic movie characters. Giles Winterbourne in The Woodlanders and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. Both men loved their women absolutely, even when those women chose to marry other men for security and social standing. Both characters were heartbreaking to watch, but they never lost hope of being reunited with their loves, and in the end they were although each couple was separated by death. |

One of my favorite romantic movies is Chocolat. I love the characters Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche. I love the characters that Johnny Depp plays and think of him as a romantic lead. He is quircky, funny, quick wit…the list goes on and on. As for Juliette Binoche, I think of her a strong and vulnerable at the same time. I think there is a balance to being a woman in love and very few role models out there. |

I agree about Chocolat. Part of what makes that match so terrific is the way that others in the town treat both of the lead characters badly, because they are different from the norm. That kind of starts the basis for their bond, which grows strong very quickly. |

Chocolat is such a wonderful movie and the love between the outcasts is as sweet and wonderful as the chocolate she makes. I was watching What Dreams May Come the other day and I forgot just how really moving and beautiful the love and romance is between Robin Williams and his wife in the film. Robin Williams’ character is willing to stay in the dark and the cold and the dangerous, because it means being with her and he would give up all the colors in the world for her—after the enormous tragedy and beauty, that one act had me in tears because it’s so hauntingly beautiful. Just have to add that “Chocolat” was a big part of the movie I watched last night, “I Love You Man.” At first a character was ridiculed for liking it…then the person who ridicules watches it and is moved to tears. It’s kind of interesting how it’s become an icon of the ultimate romantic movie. I’d have to agree, too. It is fantastic. |
