Dating and relationship advice from a professional dating coach

First Love

by LoriGorshow on September 30, 2009

I remember the first time I fell in love. I was in kindergarten. Everyday, Ronny would walk me home from school. I can remember his mother yelling to him to carry my book bag. Over the next couple of weeks, Ronny gave me gifts. Later, I learned that those ‘gifts’ came from Ronny’s mother’s jewelry box, but that’s another story. The point is had anyone told me this wasn’t love, I wouldn’t have believed them. I am forever grateful that the adults in my life let this romance play out and supported and guided us on the proper way to treat another person.

This walk down my nostalgic path came after reading a question sent to me from a young girl in 5th grade. In her question she wrote; I really like this boy who is older than me (he’s in the same grade as me he’s 6 months older). I want to flirt with him and ask him out but I’m not confident enough to ask him out. I asked many people like on Yahoo questions and they said I’m too young to date! I want a boyfriend, I believe I’m old enough and I need to find out if he likes me - I need help thanks!

Although some adults think that love can only happen at or above a certain age, I disagree. And when adults refuse to acknowledge a young person’s feelings, they send the message that they are unavailable and unapproachable. When we as adults deny that the heart knows love, we throw away the opportunity to guide and mentor young love.

You can read my response at ask the dating coach. I would love to hear how you would have responded to this young girl.
