Are you part of a teen webcam couple? Whether you are in a webcam relationship or would like to have one, there are things you can do to stay safe and increase your enjoyment.

Any teen couple who use webcams as part of their relationships are a webcam couple. Their relationship may be conducted entirely over the web, or it may just enhance their relationship.

Though most dating Web sites are for adults, teens still look for love online like everyone else. A webcam allows them to see each other and talk.

The majority of teens meet their boyfriend or girlfriend in the physical world—at school, camp, church, etc. Even though they may have met offline, teens can use webcams to maintain their relationships.

How you go about being a webcam couple depends greatly on your use and need for the webcam.

Use the webcam to stay connected as much as possible. Using instant messaging, e-mail and the phone are still great ways to talk, but none of them have the visual element a webcam provides. Being able to see each other will also make the transition to meeting each other for the first time less awkward.

Not too long ago, if you met someone at camp, the only way to stay in touch afterwards was by mail…snail mail. Now if you meet someone, you can continue keep having good times by using your webcams to stay in touch. While it won’t replace the in-person interaction you had over the summer, it’s far better than no contact at all.

Webcams aren’t reserved for the online and distant couples. They are also a good way for a local couple to stay in touch. With school, work and extracurricular activities taking up so much time, many teen couples aren’t able to see each other as often as they would like. Instead of talking about your day over the phone, a local couple can open the webcam and look each other in the eye while chatting.

There are some webcam activities all teen couples can enjoy. The only limit is your creativity. Here are some ideas to get you started:

• Watch videos together. If you both load up the same YouTube video, you pretend you are sitting next to each other at the same computer.

• Play games together. You don’t need a webcam to play online games together, but it sure will enhance the experience. Imagine being able to see the expression on your date’s face when they got stuck with the queen in Hearts or when you say “checkmate” in chess.

• Do homework. If you are working on visual projects, for art or science class, show your date what you are working on by holding it up to the camera. He or she can give feedback on your work and offer suggestions. Don’t, however, hold up your math homework so your date can copy—you only learn math by doing it yourself.

• Laugh and cry. Talking may still be the best way to use your webcam. To fully take advantage of webcam chat, use facial expressions instead of just your voice to better express your feelings.

All teen webcam couples need to follow a few simple guidelines to stay safe.

• Tell your parents. Let your parents know whom you have a webcam relationship with. Even better is to invite mom or dad over to the computer to say "hi."

• Don’t do or say anything you might regret later. Everything you do with your webcam can be recorded. Worse still—your conversations could be broadcast for the whole world to see. You don’t want to be what everyone is talking about on YouTube.

• Don’t neglect in-person relationships. As good as a webcam relationship can be; it doesn’t replace in-person relationships. Continue to hang out with your friends and do all the things you used to do before you started your webcam relationship.
