Teen Dances
From LoveToKnow Dating
Teen dances are usually a good activity for the younger dating set. If the dance is held by a reputable establishment, then it is a safe, chaperoned, public, regulated teen event. Without this type of age-appropriate dating activity, what else do teens have? It is better to provide a respectable dance than to drive their dating activities underground.
Types of Teen Dances
Teen Dance Clubs
Private clubs offer specialized events just for teens. Some are local adult dance clubs that have a special teen night or underage hours. Others are designated teen hot spots targeting only kids under the age of 21. At a reputable, licensed, teen dance club they will be required to provide a safe environment that is monitored by security or police presence.
School Dances
While some are the common prom date dances, other casual school dances also exist. More popular in some districts than others, it is certainly an activity worth exploring. Supervised by the school officials and usually at the gym or local community hall, these teen dances can be fun and safe.
Dance Parties
Whether it is a sweet sixteen birthday or just the local gang with some upbeat music, a teen dance party can be an exciting way to burn some calories. Just make sure parents are supportive and involved.
Community Events
Various community centers, churches, and fundraising organizations will often hold dances for all ages. While some may target only teens, others will also be open to the whole family. If this sounds interesting, check with your local associations to see what might be available in your neighborhood.
Safety
With any dating activity or youth oriented event, safety needs to be top of mind. Start by planning ahead and double check all the key details. The most important step for any teen dance is to talk to the people in charge before the event. This will give you the opportunity to be sure it is a reputable organized event and that all the basic safety rules will be followed. Given this, the most risky adventure involved in a respectable teen dance is what happens before and after the actual event.
The following tips will help keep all teens safe at dances:
- Adults should monitor transportation to the dance. Ideally dropping the kids off and picking them up.
- Dances should have several adult chaperones in attendance.
- The dance facility should not allow in-and-out privileges.
- Teen dance attendees should always carry a little extra cash and a cell phone for emergencies.
- Keep track of your belongings at the dance and avoid bringing anything extra special or expensive.
- Understand some basic self defense techniques.
General Tips
- Bring some money for snacks and drinks usually sold at most teen dances. You will get thirsty and hungry!
- Check ahead what the admission cost at the door will be and come prepared.
- Most dance facilities will require teens to be searched or inspected before admittance. So, don’t bring any items that could be questionable.
- Teen dances are best for responsible children, 12 and up.
- Some dances have a dress code, so ask ahead. If not, it might be a good idea to gather with your friends ahead of time to plan your dance attire. You wouldn’t want to be the only one who shows up in jeans!
- Practice some tasteful dance moves at home. Keep in mind that today’s teens can really let loose on the dance floor!
- Consider going to teen dances as a group, even those typical date dances. You can share some of the cost of transportation and arrive with an established crowd.
- Even if you are unsure, try and attend your school dances. It is the biggest party you will ever attend where you know most of the people there. Plus, it will make good memories.
- Always include your parents in your plans, for both your safety and sanity.
