Sweet Text Messages
From LoveToKnow Dating
In the information age, the love letter has been replaced by sweet text messages sent cheaply and easily from the phone. In the midst of a hectic day, suddenly having your phone happily buzz with a romantic thought from someone is bound to improve your mood. Sending them will also focus your thoughts on that special someone, and make you look forward to time together that much more.
Sweet Text Messages: Better Than Flowers
Notice that sentence did not say "A replacement for flowers." Sweet text messages, even the sweetest, can't beat chocolate or flowers. However, they can be a nice way to unobtrusively let someone know you're thinking about them. In fact, that's a sweet text message in and of itself:
I was just thinking about you. It made me smile.
The purpose of a text is not to overwhelm someone, or even to do more than bring a small smile to their face. It's the cumulative effect, the butterfly wing that sets in motion a hurricane of passion later on:
Tonight is going to be wonderful, just because I get to spend time with you.
Sweet and Short
One of the reasons text messages are such a popular way to let someone know that you care is because they are, of necessity, only 140 characters long – which means there is no pressure to come up with Shakespearean soliloquoys. Instead, the ideas communicated briefly are usually expanded in the imagination of the recipient.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that some people really hate the abbreviated words that sometimes get used in text messaging, and some don't mind it at all. Just make sure that you know how your intended recipient feels – otherwise your sweet I CANT W8 2 HOLD U N KISS UR LIPZ might not go over well. If that's the case, try:
Your eyes, your lips, your hands…you.
That message really doesn't say anything – but it suggests all sorts of things, from just an adoring gaze to hot romantic makeout sessions. The key is that the focus is on the person you are sending the message to, not on yourself. Bet you can't wait to see me, isn't a very sweet message. On the other hand, You are the most awesome boyfriend in the world! is almost childish in its exuberance, but is bound to make any man feel good.
Good Subjects for Text Messages
One of the great things about sending a text message is that since it is going directly from your phone to theirs, it is basically the equivalent of a whisper in their ear. There is an assumed privacy about text messages, and that frees you to say a lot of things that might be embarrassing in front of your romantic interest. As long as you're sure that they are in the same frame of mind, sending a sexually suggestive text message can be just the right spice to add to a relationship. It's usually a good thing to do after you’ve had a few dates and talked for a while – you want to err on the side of caution.
When NOT to Send Text Messages
As cheap and convenient as it is to send sweet text messages, there are some circumstances when it would be inappropriate to send them. For instance:
- Don't send text messages while driving a car
- Don't send text messages while eating with someone else
- Don't send text messages during a movie or performing arts event
- Especially when sending suggestive texts, make sure you are sending the text to the right person. It can be very embarrassing to have the right text go to the wrong phone.
And it should go without saying, don't send texts while you're on a date – even if it seems like it won't matter, it does. A date is a time when you're supposed to be focused on spending time with each other, and even if it's watching something else, it's watching together. If you start pressing buttons on your phone, it implies that your attention is elsewhere. Save your thumbs for another time, when you can happily surprise them with a romantic buzz.
