What's Your Pleasure?
Now for all this talk of the stereotypical images of romantic dining, what's romantic is really up to the individual. Maybe you prefer snuggling on the couch with take-out Chinese over a gourmet five-course meal. Perhaps the greasy spoon where you went for your first date still holds special meaning to you. Do what feels right and what sets the romantic mood for you, and forget about the rest.

Romantic Dining Ideas

A romantic dinner can be a great date idea. Whether you are on your first date or your fiftieth, it can make for a memorable evening. Most romantic dining spots are also quiet and private, so they are conducive to intimate conversation. Consider the following options for your special meal.

Picnic

A picnic is a classic option for romantic dining. The fresh air, the warm sun, and the sounds of nature combine for a winning atmosphere. Visit a public park or beach for your outdoor meal. Find a secluded spot for a more intimate setting. However, the idea of the picnic is more important than the specific location, so you can also enjoy a picnic in your backyard, or even throw a blanket on the living room floor.

If you don't have a traditional picnic basket, a cooler or even a roomy tote bag will do for carrying your meal. Don't forget the blanket, though. In addition to making the ground more comfortable, the space of the blanket creates your own private place and encourages getting close.

While most couples think of a bright spring day when picturing the perfect setting for a picnic, moonlight can provide an extra dose of romance. Combine the ambience of a candlelight dinner with the coziness and casual charm of a picnic. Just don't forget the bug spray; there's nothing romantic about mosquito bites.

Fancy Restaurant

A fancy restaurant can definitely set the mood for an evening of romance. You'll want to find a place with soft lighting, well-dressed waitstaff, private tables and exquisite food. If your date has a favorite cuisine, try to find a high-class offering of those favorite foods. This will probably be the type of restaurant that requires reservations, so plan ahead. You should also check the dress code before arriving for dinner. Will a jacket and tie be required, or is a business casual look acceptable?

Candlelight Dinner

Bring the feel of that swanky little bistro to your own home with a romantic dinner for two. Dim the lights, break out the fine china, and put some light jazz on the stereo. There are no rules to the food your must serve. Showing off your cooking skills can be a way to impress your date, but if you don't have any cooking skills, there's nothing wrong with ordering in, or even cooking the meal together.

More Romantic Tips

Don't want the evening to end? Most romantic dinners lead quite nicely to easy ways to extend the date. If you're enjoying a picnic, find a park where you can take a nature walk after your meal. For evening picnics, bring along a telescope for star-gazing. If you're all dressed up for an elegant dinner, head for the theater or an art show to continue your date.

Romantic dining can get expensive, but it doesn't have to be. If you're feeling frugal, you may be able to find a romantic location offering lunch specials, or skip the main meal, and head to an exclusive restaurant for decadent desserts. Choosing homemade options, like packing your own sandwiches for a picnic instead of stopping by a deli, can also cut costs. Much of the romance is in the presentation and the feelings you evoke in each other. In fact, the right atmosphere can turn a cup of ramen into a memorable meal.
