Relationship compatibility defines whether a relationship between you and another person is a good match or not. Every relationship is different, but there are three essential components that will define your compatibility with another person.

Connections define your compatibility with other people. Dating services like to use compatibility scales by matching interests, talents and backgrounds. If two people like doing the same things, they share greater relationship compatibility and are more likely to stay together.

Relationship compatibility does not ensure a relationship’s success. You can share common interests with many people, enjoy doing many of the same things, but still lack romantic interest. Where do you begin with matching compatibility?

Spiritual Compatibility

Spiritual compatibility describes how important your religious beliefs are to you and your potential partner. If you feel strongly about attending church on Sundays, prayer before meals and avoiding sins; you are going to be happier with a partner who is equally dedicated to attending church, prayer and avoiding sinful behavior.

Your spiritual beliefs do not have to be exact, for example, you and your partner may come from different denominations and faiths, but share an equal level of commitment. Different faith couples can work if they share a mutual respect for each other’s beliefs and blend them together.

Social Compatibility

We are the sum of our experiences, familial relationships and upbringing. Our social behavior hinges on a variety of factors. Opposites can and do attract, but outgoing, vivacious people usually attract the same type of people. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you want to be able to share your interest with another person, if your potential partner can’t stand open air and sunshine, you will have a hard time finding activities to do together.

Shared activities are great date ideas and provide a forum where the two of you can get to know one another. This is an area, especially in early dating, in which one potential partner may mislead another without intentional malice. Physical attraction and likability are strong factors in dating, you may fabricate shared interests just to give the relationship time to develop, but if your fabrication does not become reality, it will leave you with a ticking time bomb for problems in the future.

Physical Compatibility

Physical compatibility cannot be faked; it is a vital component in your relationship compatibility. Sexual attraction either exists or doesn't. However, fabricating attraction does happen and physical attraction can develop with strong feelings. Physical relationships are about more than sexual attraction, they include proclivities, fetishes and preferences. People who are attracted to same-sex partners may seek heterosexual relationships for a variety of reasons, but it will not preclude their attractions to same sex partners. If you are physically incompatible with your partner, you most likely will run into trouble later in your relationship.

Can Physical Compatibility Change?

Over time, you will change and your physical attraction for someone may diminish. However, it can also grow stronger and more intense as you become closer in tune with your partner.

Define Incompatibility

You may face relationship incompatibility if you have to make certain choices be with the person:

Challenge your moral or ethical being
Require you to act out of character
Leave you with no sense of control or self
Demand that you make all the sacrifices

Incompatible relationships happen every day. You may find yourself attracted to someone different from you because he or she intrigues you. Occasionally, these types of relationships can work out, but when you are completely different or forcing yourself to behave in ways you wouldn’t, the relationship will suffer. Loneliness can be a powerful motivator to launch you into a relationship, but try to make it a compatible one.
