Tips for Online Dating
From LoveToKnow Dating
LoveToKnow's Dating site is a great place to look for tips for online dating! If you want to go beyond what we offer, though, you can find plenty of advice, good and bad, online.
Help with Online Dating
Most of the big online dating sites offer advice on dating. For an extensive collection of articles offering online dating tips, try these:
- Date.Info. This online dating magazine is affiliated with Date.com. It has safety tips, three advice columns, and an extensive section of articles about online dating. There's advice on what to do once you meet in person, too.
- iVillage.com. iVillage is an online magazine with all kinds of lifestyle information and advice. To find their online dating section, look under Love and Sex, then under Singles and Dating. You'll find a series of articles with suggestions on how to create a great profile, how to flirt online, how to avoid cheats and scammers, and much more. You'll also a message board where readers share stories, suggestions, celebrations and sympathy.
General Dating Tips
- AskMen.com. This man-centric site offers tips for men, but it's also a find for women who want to know why men do what they do. The site is geared toward people who date often, with advice on things like "how to time your move" and how to get a woman into bed. The behavior it recommends will attract some women, amuse some, and turn some off for good.
- SavvyMiss. For women in need of advice, SavvyMiss.com steps in with articles, blogs, message boards, and an advice column. Topics include how to find a man and what to do with him once you've got him. Both male and female columnists offer their thoughts.
- Dr. Phil. TV personality Dr. Phil remains a prolific source of advice on dating and relationships. His commonsense tips have helped many people. Message boards let readers share their own stories and offer advice to others.
Online Dating Resources
| ||||
Most web sites offering online dating tips are self-contained. They don't direct you to other dating tips sites, because they want you to stick around. The only links they offer are ads for online dating sites.
Here's one site that does offer some helpful outside links: The Cyberdating Home Page. The creator of this simple site shares her own story of meeting her husband online and invites others to write in with their experiences. In addition to online dating tips, she provides links to online dating sites, including ones offering free trials. She also stresses the importance of verifying everything a potential online match tells you. There are extensive links to reverse phone directories, records search sites, and more.
Tips for Online Dating at the Bookstore
If you're willing to leave your computer for a while, you can find a number of online dating books. Most of these books are straightforward how-to guides, with advice on writing a good profile and how to choose a great photo. There's a big selection at Amazon.com, but if you're not an absolute beginner you might want to hit the local bookstore or library and flip through some books before you choose one.
Wisdom or Washout?
Once you've found a site offering tips for online dating, how do you know if it's advice worth taking? It can be hard to tell. Advice that's great for one situation might be lousy for another. And, since many sites have multiple writers, one article might be helpful and the next one utterly wrong.
When you're evaluating dating advice, consider:
- Credentials. If the article discusses psychology, is the writer a certified therapist or psychologist?
- Experience. What kind of dating experience does the writer have? Someone who's been married for years might not understand the modern online dating scene. And if you're looking for a relationship, think twice before taking advice from someone who brags about playing the field.
- Motive. Some online dating tips are offered just to get you to sign up for an online dating site.
- Common sense. If the advice sounds crazy, it might be. Don't go against your instincts just because of an online tip.
