Online Dating

If you've been looking for love in all the wrong places, online dating may help you target your ideal mate.
Online Dating
Love meets the new millennium in the form of online dating. Dating the old fashioned way takes a long time to yield results. Partners tend to reveal themselves in layers, and you can spend weeks, months and even years with someone before you finally realize they are not your ideal match.
Online dating is a bit different, allowing you to better target the kind of person you are looking for. Basically, you'll join an internet dating service, sort of like one big dating club with an exclusive membership, where you will be introduced to other like-minded singles.
Some of these websites are free but many charge a fee, and most are targeted toward specific dating preferences such as sexual orientation, race or heritage, religious preference, and age groups. You can compare sites to find one that seems the best fit for you.
Getting Started
Most online dating sites operate on a similar format. They all propose to cut through the mating ritual to help you find someone who's truly compatible with you and wants an honest and lasting relationship just as much as you do.
You'll fill out a profile/survey to reveal your personality traits and learn what type of person should be your ideal match. You will then be directed to choose a subscription plan and pay the fee required. Next, your profile will be posted on the site, viewable only to members with compatible profiles, and you will also have the opportunity to view their profiles as well. You can request an introduction to anyone you choose as long as the other party agrees to it, and the site managers will let you know who's interested in meeting you also.
From that point, you are free to hold online conversations through the site with the people you have selected to get to know them better and to see if there is some initial attraction that is worth investigating. You can exchange photos through the site and determine if you want to meet in person. Not every online dating experience moves into the "real dating" phase, but there are success stories of online romances that turned out to be the real thing, resulting in marriage. Like anything else in life, you take your chances.
Proceed with Caution
Initial introductions are guarded with a certain level of anonymity, and you should never offer your personal phone number, home address, or e-mail to anyone right away. This provides a layer of protection for you as you get to know your new online friends, and it gives you time to judge whether you would be comfortable speaking on the phone or meeting in person.
Both you and the other person involved must agree to a full exchange of identities and contact information if you want to try taking the new friendship to the next level.
Keep in mind that no matter how many times you've communicated with a person online, they are still a stranger when you meet in person, so use common sense and don't allow yourself to be put into a situation you may not want to be in. Meet in a public place, and make sure friends and family know where you're going and when you plan to return. If your plans change, let them know.
Happily Ever After?
Can you really find lasting happiness with someone you meet through online dating? The short answer is yes, but it's not a guarantee for everyone. Sometimes a relationship fizzles, but there are numerous stories of online romances that resulted in marriage. However, when you are swimming in a dating pool with other singles who are truly ready and actively looking for a permanent relationship, your chances of finding Mr./Ms. Right are bound to rise significantly.

Lucy, sometimes you have to take online relationships for what they are worth. Other times, they can make the transition into real time. If you just approach it as a good time rather than a live or die relationship, you can get a lot of fun and sometimes value out of it.
I met hubby online--as a friend. We've been together nine years as of this month.
