Myspace Friend Generator
From LoveToKnow Dating
If you're using Myspace to find people to date, a Myspace friend generator can help you jazz up your page.
Making Friends on Myspace
The social networking site Myspace lets users create personalized web pages. You can post pictures, display your hobbies and interests, play music, and link to other sites. A "friend space" features people you're connected to in some way. They might be friends, family, or just acquaintances. They might even be people you only know online.
Using the friend space is a great way to network. You can contact friends of friends to introduce yourself. If you're interested in someone, you can click on his or her name to see what their page is like. If you admire what they've done, you can send a compliment. And, of course, a lot of people use the networking function to flirt.
The Basic Friend Space
When you first sign up for Myspace, you type in your personal information and the site creates a simple page for you. The friend space display has room for up to twenty-four friends' names and pictures. It also shows your total number of friends, but users have to click on a link to see the full list.
If you want to create a fancier Myspace page, including a bigger or better friend space, you'll need to edit the HTML code-a kind of computer language-that's behind the layout. But what if you're not even sure what HTML stands for? (It's HyperText Markup Language.)
That's where pre-made layouts and generators come in. Dozens of web sites offer free layouts, but changing the whole page can be confusing for beginners. If you want to change one section, like the friend space, you can use a "generator" that creates the code for just that section.
Changing the Friend Space

A "Myspace friend generator" doesn't actually collect any new friends for you. What it does is give you a simple way to improve your friend space. It's called a generator because it generates computer code for you.
Generator sites ask you to type your information into a simple form. Then they produce the code you'll need, with your information already filled in. You simply copy the code, click edit on your Myspace profile, and paste the code in. Follow the generator site's instructions on exactly where to paste the code.
Using a Myspace Friend Generator
Many Myspace friend generators are left over from the site's early days. At one time, you couldn't have more than eight people in the friend space. So users created their own code to display a few more friends. The basic Myspace template now allows up to twenty-four people, but if you want more you can find generators that let you display up to forty.
Some versions of the Myspace friend generator let you customize the language in the friend space. Instead of saying "100 friends," for example, you can make it say "100 lovers," or anything else you choose. You can show friends' names and photos together or choose just names or just pictures. You can limit photo size. You can also control how the comments section will appear.
Disadvantages of a Custom Friend Space
When you tamper with the basic Myspace code, you have lots of opportunities to mess up your layout! If you're new to writing code, it might take many tries to get your page to look right. Finding a computer-savvy friend (or a techno-talented child) can save a lot of time and energy.
The basic layout that Myspace supplies is linked to other functions on the site. For example, if a friend updates his picture on his own page, his picture on your friend space will update, too. But if you use your own code, you can lose those connections. You may have to update your friend space manually.
Some Easy-to-Use Generators
It's probably impossible to find a Myspace friend generator that's completely foolproof. Even though the code is written for you, you still have to know where and how to paste it into your template. Still, some generator sites do try to make it easy.
Here are two examples:
- R4wr.com has a generator that lets you put up to forty friends on your front page and change some other aspects of the friend space layout.
- MyspaceSalon offers a generator with fewer functions but adds friendly and encouraging instructions.
