Love Poems for Valentines Day
From LoveToKnow Dating
Love poems for Valentine’s Day are traditional and romantic. While not every man or woman is a poet, it’s amazing how sweet and touching a simple children’s poem can be. Roses are red, violets are blue, it’s Valentine’s Day and I’m in love with you.
Write Your Own Love Poems for Valentine’s Day
If writing your own love poems for Valentine’s Day is something you’ve always wanted to do, begin by writing down all the words you associate with the person you care about. Words of love take their shape from the way in which they are spoken. Is your boyfriend strong and honorable? Is your girlfriend funny and compassionate? Is he or she charming and optimistic? These words provide the first lines of poetry to write a beautiful poem dedicated to your romantic partner.
Once you have a handful of descriptive words, write a page of prose describing the first time you saw him or her, the first time you kissed, a special day (wedding day, birthday) and the moment you realized that you loved him or her. You can add more at the end about how you feel in that moment that you are writing the prose or the poem. As you read back through what you’ve written, replace weak verbs with strong ones and consider adding descriptions that utilize the senses.
- What does love smell like?
- What does it look like?
- What does it taste like?
- What does it sound like?
- What does it feel like?
- How does your partner fulfill all of these senses?
Read back through the prose and sum up each moment in a handful of words. If metaphors appeal to you, choose a metaphor for each moment. Clouds and rain can represent loneliness while the sun breaking through the clouds may represent the dawning realization of love. Write down your sentences, don’t worry about rhyming or meter, and read them aloud and listen to the emphasis you place on the words. Tweak the language until it says what you want it to say.
Consider framing the poem and reading it aloud on that special day. Remember, that love poems are personal gifts that not only express your feelings, but can serve as a reminder for many days to come. Long after chocolate is gone and the flowers wilted, the love poem will still be there.
Quote Other Love Poems
A poem should come from the heart and reflect your feelings. If you cannot write it or find the words to express it, turn to great poets such as Bronte, Browning, Shelley, Tennyson, Emerson, Whitman, Frost and more for your inspiration. Many of these poets wrote about love, romance and beauty. You might even choose Bible passages that hold particularly strong meaning for you and your partner.
If you find a poem by another that says what you want to say, consider printing it out and framing it with a picture of you and your loved one. It is not just the poem that is the romantic gesture, but the ability to express your feelings and share them.
