Lesbians Kissing
From LoveToKnow Dating
The image of lesbians kissing can inspire a wide variety of reactions in people. Regardless of your opinions on sexual identity, the fact is that romantic interactions between women are becoming more and more a part of our mainstream culture.
Famous Moments of Lesbians Kissing
Pop culture has had many instances of lesbians kissing, even when the general public didn't realize it. The movie Cruel Intentions was one of the more blatant efforts by a director to insert a blatantly lesbian kiss into a mainstream movie. Other movies such as the award-winning Aimee and Jaguar (1999) took a less sensationalistic, more historical view of the plight of lesbians persecuted by their culture.
However, as time has gone on, the culture has actually gotten more and more used to the idea of lesbian dating. One of the first toes dipped in the water of acceptance was on the Ellen DeGeneres comedy show, which in 1997 had Ellen's character realizing her homosexuality in a famous "coming out" episode. The episode caused a great deal of controversy, and the actress who played Ellen's girlfriend, Laura Dern, was actually boycotted by Hollywood for over a year after the episode. Over a decade later, though, Dern has no regrets about being one of the first lesbians kissing on TV. It was "an extraordinary experience and opportunity."
After a time, the lesbian kiss has become almost a fashion statement – with the most blatant being the kiss between Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera at the Video Music Awards in 2003. The kisses weren't by any means lesbian – none of the women had portrayed more than a mild "heteroflexibility" in their public personas – but the media went into a frenzy. Ranging from simple shock and occasional cheering to conservative Rush Limbaugh's absurd worry that "some Al-Qaeda thug could see this kissing...and decide to punish us?", the kiss did de-sensitize the public to the idea of lesbians kissing and chipped away at the edifice of homophobia.
The L Word: Lesbian Drama
With the advent of the drama The L Word lesbian romantic entanglements have gained millions of fans, whether they are lesbian-identified or not. While describing it as an "addictive, drama-filled show", FiveStar, a lesbian video artist and activist admits that the story – and the kissing – is compelling. "There's tons of kisses from the L-word that are famous," she said. "People upload kisses to YouTube all the time." In her opinion, the most shocking kiss was between the characters Shane and Jenny – not because of the fact of two women locked in a French kiss, but rather because "Jenny is portrayed as a psychopath."
In fact, The L Word may have finally taken the lesbian kiss out of the shock arena and put it into the same dramatic realm that heterosexual kisses have enjoyed. Danica, another fan of The L Word, says her favorite kiss was between the characters Shane and Carmen, because "everybody knew Carmen was the best girlfriend Shane ever had, and the two were totally hot." In other words, it wasn't the kiss itself that was so riveting – but rather, what the kiss represented between the two women.
The L-Word has developed the character-driven lesbian kiss.
Sometimes Coffee is Not Just Coffee
What is the big difference between an affectionate peck between friends and the first kisses of a lesbian relationship? It is all in the intention, and as Fivestar mentions, sometimes the intentions can be misread. "It's hard to understand someone's intentions...in a heterosexual paradigm, it would be considered friendly for two women to get coffee... not sexy." Something as simple as coffee or dinner can be interpreted as a seduction technique. Like any relationship, lesbian, gay, or straight, communication always makes things go more smoothly.
A kiss can certainly be a part of that communication – and paying attention to kissing techniques from any passionate embrace can improve the message regardless of gender. As lesbians locking lips becomes more commonly accepted, there will be even more opportunities to watch, learn, and enjoy the intimate form of contact.
