Hi, Dating Coach, I have been going out with a girl that I really like for about almost a year, (our anniversary is soon) and she knows a lot about romance, so I know she expects me to do something amazing. But, I know nothing about romance and am lost trying to think of something, please help me with ideas to surprise her. Thanks.

Dear Paranoid,

There are three things to know in order to be romantic. The first is that romance doesn’t have to be expensive. The second, romance is in the details. Third thing to remember, being romantic takes planning. Let’s start with number one. To be romantic, you don’t have to spend a lot of money or any money for that matter, but you do have to be creative. To celebrate your first anniversary, begin by thinking about how much time you want to spend celebrating. Do you want to make it a whole day thing, half a day? Maybe you want to do something special for a part of the day. However, which part of the day, morning, afternoon or evening?

Do you want to plan the whole thing or do you want her involved? You could plan activities and her gift around a theme and have her involved at the end. To be creative, think about what are your girlfriend’s hobbies, interests or favorite places she has already visited or would like to visit. Maybe the two of you shared a trip together that brings back found memories or perhaps you would like to recreate the way the two of you met? Any of these ideas gives you a place to start being creative.

Next, romance is in the details and in the planning. For example, her travel fantasy has been to visit Paris. You might plan most of the adventure for the celebration and ask her to be involved by bringing the dessert. For a Paris theme, you could decorate a room at your place or hers, with the sights, sounds and smells of Paris. You could rent a video with a Paris theme. Plan to make her a dinner based on a Paris menu while French music is playing in the background. Your gift to her could be a token keepsake of a future trip to Paris. End the night with her dessert.

If you don’t know what she is passionate about, make it a game. Start by giving her two choices. For example, Paris or Rome; when she picks one use that to give her another choice. Rome or China, China or … Ask about her favorite color the same way. Red or blue, blue or magenta, continue this type of game until you have narrowed down her preferences. If all else fails, you could ask her best friends, I am sure they would have some ideas about her likes and dislikes.

One last tip, write her a handwritten love note. Whether you by a card or make one; the love note is a romantic and personalized gift from your heart to hers. When writing, be specific and tell her what you like about her. Complete the letter by telling her how since she has come into your life, you as a man have grown. Woman love handwritten messages and this tip is sure to show her just how romantic you are.
