Teenage hangouts change regularly both off and online. One way to find popular free teen chat rooms is to ask friends where they like to chat online. They'll be able to tell you what the site is like and the kinds of things people talk about.

You can also find specific recommendations at Yahoo Answers. Internet users can write in to ask about cool places to chat, and other users answer. Keep in mind that the reviews are not scientific or possibly even ethical. The problem is, some of the users are adults who want to connect with teens for sex — and that's not just gross, it's illegal. Also, some of the recommendations will lead you to sites that trick you into downloading spyware and other programs that will mess up your computer or invade your privacy.
More Than Just Chat
A lot of chat rooms — either for teens or for adults — become boring quickly. There simply isn't any real conversation. Messages are typically very short and people are talking over each other, so it's hard to tell who someone's talking to. If you're interested in a more in-depth experience, you might want to try one of the virtual reality sites. They let you create a character and enter an imaginary world; where you can meet and talk to other people's characters while playing games, going on adventures, or just hanging out.

Habbo Hotel
This free site welcomes everyone age 13 and up, but it's specifically designed for teens aged 13 to 18. The Habbo Hotel is a virtual 5-star resort. Teens are invited to create their own, personalized characters who can move around the hotel, eat at the restaurants, swim in the pool, go dancing, and more. Characters can meet, chat with each other, hang out, play games, and make up adventures. You even get your own hotel room, which you can decorate however you want. Advanced features like special furniture and VIP rooms can be bought with Habbo "coins," which do cost real money, but most of the rest of the site is free.
Neopets
Neopets lets you create your own virtual "pet," a fantasy creature which may or may not resemble a real animal. Neopets can travel around the site's very detailed world, meet and play games with other pets, and chat on the active forum boards. Playing the games and participating in other site activities wins you "neopoints," which you can use to buy imaginary merchandise. The site makes its money from advertising, so you don't have to pay to join.
MySpace
Technically, MySpace doesn't have chat rooms. But it does have active forums, email, and thousands of personalized pages made by teens. The forums cover lots of topics, including relationships, movies, music, and more. MySpace users are all ages, but it's easy to make a connection with other teenagers on this site. In fact, many teenagers recommend MySpace instead of free teen chat rooms.
Free Teen Chat Room Safety
As a teen, hanging out with friends online can be fun, but chat rooms do have the potential to be dangerous. Unforntunately it's common for adults to pose as teenagers. Some of these adults are just having fun, seeing what it's like to chat with teens. This isn't always harmless though, as it can be very hurtful to find out that the person you thought was a friend was actually lying to you. Worse, some adults pretend to be teenagers because they want to take advantage of teens. Sexual predators are a very real danger online.
Here are some safety tips, based on advice from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
- Never give out ANY personal information. Don't tell anyone your last name, your phone number, or your address.
- Don't hang out in chat rooms where the conversation is all about sex. These rooms are tempting places for child molesters and sexual predators.
- Consider using a screen name that doesn't reveal whether you're a girl or a guy.
- Stay away from chat rooms that are associated with cults or groups that do dangerous things.
- Don't talk to people who try to get you to break the law or do something you aren't comfortable with.
- Don't let your guard down, even in a "private" room. Even if you think you and a friend are the only people who can see your conversation, you might be wrong. Some sites let uninvited users enter private rooms.
- Don't meet your online friends in person unless your parents have given you permission. Even then, you should go someplace public and bring an adult along.
