Neopets lets you create your own virtual "pet," a fantasy creature which may or may not resemble a real animal. Neopets can travel around the site's very detailed world, meet and play games with other pets, and chat on the active forum boards. Playing the games and participating in other site activities wins you "neopoints," which you can use to buy imaginary merchandise. The site makes its money from advertising, so you don't have to pay to join.

Technically, MySpace doesn't have chat rooms. But it does have active forums, email, and thousands of personalized pages made by teens. The forums cover lots of topics, including relationships, movies, music, and more. MySpace users are all ages, but it's easy to make a connection with other teenagers on this site. In fact, many teenagers recommend MySpace instead of free teen chat rooms.

As a teen, hanging out with friends online can be fun, but chat rooms do have the potential to be dangerous. Unforntunately it's common for adults to pose as teenagers. Some of these adults are just having fun, seeing what it's like to chat with teens. • Stay away from chat rooms that are associated with cults or groups that do dangerous things.
• Don't talk to people who try to get you to break the law or do something you aren't comfortable with.
• Don't let your guard down, even in a "private" room. Even if you think you and a friend are the only people who can see your conversation, you might be wrong. Some sites let uninvited users enter private rooms.
• Don't meet your online friends in person unless your parents have given you permission. Even then, you should go someplace public and bring an adult along.
