Dating Myspace.com Site

Because the Internet is a prevalent part of most people’s lives, it’s only natural that many people turn to the cyber world to search for their significant others. Dating Web sites abound, and while some of them may be fly-by-night organizations, others are truly legit. Such is the case with the dating Myspace.com site. MySpace hit the Web full force, and its success has amazed many. According to Wired Magazine contributing editor Spencer Reiss said that MySpace is the biggest mall, nightclub and 7-Eleven parking lot ever created and the most disruptive force to hit pop culture since MTV.

History of MySpace

This mega, social networking site was created in 2003 by Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe (CEO). It was designed to be a more casual, music-driven version of Friendster, and MySpace quickly surpassed its predecessor. Today, the site’s membership is comprised mostly of teens and twenty and thirty-somethings and has grown to some 80 million users. Its success prompted Rupert Murdoch to pay half a billion dollars for the site in July 2005. In July 2006, MySpace was touted as the most visited Web site in the U.S.

MySpace Features

MySpace is easy to use, and it offers lots of great features like the following:

  • Users create a free profile, providing as little or as much information as they choose.
  • Once a profile has been created, users can then expand their own personal network by inviting a circle of friends to join.
  • Users can keep online journals, or blogs, post videos, listen to music and update their interests, and they can spend time viewing their friends’ journals, photos, and information about their interests as well.
  • Users can also make new friends by meeting the mutual friends of other acquaintances, thus expanding their networks.
  • Another great feature involves browsing. Users find people in the site by using various search criteria, such as hobbies, location, gender, and age.
  • Users can contact other MySpace members through e-mail while maintaining the privacy of their own personal information.
  • Make it personal. While this site isn’t just limited to those looking for love, it is frequently used as an online dating site, too.

MySpace and Dating

Using the dating Myspace.com site isn’t difficult. Keep the following tips in mind as you search for romance across the Web.

  • Be honest. Don’t portray yourself as something you’re not! If the relationship you are cultivating becomes more serious, you’ll have to come clean if you’ve lied!
  • Post a recent, classy, truthful photo. Remember, anyone can see what you’ve posted, and if you want to make a good impression, then use some common sense! Respect is important in every relationship! Also, don’t be afraid to post a picture of all of you, not just from the neck up!
  • List your hobbies and interests. Don’t forget to be honest here as well. If you love sports, that’s great, but explain that you love watching tennis, not playing it, if this is the truth.
  • Don’t try to present an attitude or a front for others. Acting and sounding tough online can actually come out as sounding conceited and narcissistic.
  • Don’t brag. You may be a successful artist, athlete, or business executive, but those are traits someone can find out about you once you’ve established communication. Instead, briefly include something about yourself in the interests, hobbies, and occupation section.

Cautions and Dangers

As with any online transaction or communication, common sense must be used at all times on MySpace. Sexual predators use the site as a major hunting ground for children and teens, most often portraying themselves as kids and obtaining a user’s trust and subsequently that user’s personal information. This warning isn’t just for teens, however.

  • Don’t give out personal information!
  • Don’t assume that the person to whom you are e-mailing is who they say they are!
  • Don’t agree to meet anyone in person unless you take a friend, tell others where you are going, and meet in a very public place. Again, don’t give them your personal information.
  • If you feel threatened or concerned in any way, break off communications immediately. Contact MySpace and your local authorities as well.

Finally, MySpace can be a great place to make new friends and even find romance. Remember, however, to always use common sense. A little skepticism on your part is a good thing!
