Breakup Poems
From LoveToKnow Dating
Thinking about breaking up with your boyfriend or girlfriend and want a breakup poem that will let express how you feel? Read on to find out how you can write a poem or find one online.
Using Breakup Poems
It's never easy to break up with someone, no matter what kind of relationship you have been in. You may not know what to say or how to say it in a way that won't hurt the person but let him or her know why you want to move on. Breakup poems are a great way to do this because they sound gentler than bluntly telling the person why you do not want to be together anymore.
Writing Your Own Poems for a Breakup
If you have poem writing talent then you might consider writing your own. This way every word you write comes directly from your own heart. Here are some tips when you write your own poem:
- If you are holding a grudge you don't want reflected in the poem, you might try writing out your feelings in a letter first and then try writing a poem when your mind is clear.
- Write the poem and then have a close friend read it. Your friend will be able to tell you the feeling he or she gets from the poem so you can make sure you are delivering your message the way you want to.
- Remain focused when you write it so you don't go off on a tangent, which may confuse your mate. The message of the poem should be clear you want to break up with him or her.
- After you write it, put it away for a few days and come back to it. When you look at it again, you will be able to tell if it's what you really want to say to your partner.
How to Deliver the Poem
Once you have your poem, you may not know exactly how to deliver it to your soon to be ex.
- Card
Find a blank greeting card and write the poem inside. You could also make your own card.
- Letter
If you have some other things to get off your chest, you can place the poem at the beginning or the end of a letter. You could write an introduction to the poem or explain why you think the poem is perfect for the breakup of the relationship.
- Read it
You can read your poem to your partner, just as long as you have the guts to get through it.
Long Distance Relationships
The best way to deliver the news you want to end the relationship is in person but sometimes that may not be possible such as in a long distance relationship. Here are some options for you if you are not able to break up in person.
Place your poem in an e-mail. If the poem is not obvious about you wanting to end the relationship, you need to write more in the e-mail to make it clear.
- Read it over the phone
Breaking up over the phone is the next best thing when you can't see the person. You can read it on the phone and then talk about it.
- Send a letter or card
This will catch your partner off guard so be prepared to receive an upsetting phone call if you choose to do it this way.

Saying Goodbye
Even though you may know ending the relationship is the best thing for you and your partner, it might still hurt. Take time to mourn the loss of the union you had with your mate and remind yourself that you walked away for a reason. Talk to friends and take care of yourself. With time, you will feel better about the situation and be able to start looking for someone new.
