Black lesbian websites allow women of color to meet other women with the same sexual preferences. There are numerous websites like these on the Internet, and many of them are free.

Choosing a Website

Many people mistakenly believe that black lesbian websites are only about sex. While this is certainly the case for many sites, there are other sites which are dedicated to the support and empowerment of black lesbians. These sites seek to promote unity within the African American culture. Organizations, such as the United Lesbians of African Heritage focus on educating black women on the topics of education, health, well-being, and advocacy. The United Lesbians of African Heritage, or ULOAH as it is commonly known, seeks to make the world a safer place for black lesbians.

For women of any color, making the choice to come out is often a difficult one. As you wade through the thousands of websites available, consider what you really want in an Internet site.

  • Are you mainly curious?
  • Do you need the support of other black lesbians?
  • Are you looking for only sex, or do you seek companionship?
  • Do you want to join a community of other black lesbians?
  • Do you want to a significant someone that you can share your life with?
  • Do you seek empowerment and advocacy with other women just like yourself?

Use Caution

Online dating sites can offer you a great way to connect with other lesbians who are women of color. Depending upon your preferences and your needs, these websites may have a lot to offer. However, remember that not every site you access is on the up and up.

  • Don't give out your personal information, including your full name, address, phone number, etc.
  • Remember, that the person with whom you are corresponding or chatting may not be who she says she is.
  • Keep in mind that not everyone may be looking for the same thing from these websites.
  • Don't meet anyone in person without letting someone know where you are going, taking someone with you, or meeting that person in a very public place.
  • If you feel threatened in any way, contact the administrator of the site in which you are participating.
  • If you are physically threatened, contact your local authorities as well.

Black Lesbians Websites

We've found some great black lesbian websites for you to check out. Keep in mind, however, that some of these may not be exactly what you are looking for. If not, keep searching.

  • Nia Collective-The NIA Collective's purpose is to provide a safe environment for the growth and empowerment of black lesbians. This organization is a volunteer run, community based, non-profit site. The organization as started in San Francisco during the Black Caucus at the Lesbian of Color Conference in 1987. NIA is the fifth principle of Kwanzaa, the Winter Harvest celebration.
  • Zuna Institute-Zuna is another organization dedicated to the advocacy and promotion of black lesbians all over the world. The organization hosts a black leadership conference.
  • National Black Justice Coalition- The National Black Justice Coalition is a civil rights organization that is focused on empowering black, same-gender-loving, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people. The coalition works throughout communities to promote social justice, equality, and an end to racism and homophobia.
  • Sistahs on the Shelf-This is an interactive site, formatted in blog style. The site encourages readers to comment on books, share reviews, and just have fun corresponding with other black lesbians.
  • Empowering Lesbians-This site's mission is provide peer support through tri-monthly group discussions which are geared toward addressing the needs of the black lesbians and other bisexual women.
